  1. Dear Laura,
Above, you say HINT: Include some quotes from the book. Why would you recommend doing that?

    • Hi Brooke. If a key aspect of the essay is telling me how the book helped you become a better writer, it makes sense to include a line or two from the book that truly helped you. See last year’s winner’s essay, and you’ll see what I mean.

  2. Maia

    Are there different age categories?

  3. Zuha

    Hello Laura,

Do we email you our entry or is there some form we have to send it through like the Junior Authors Contest forms?

    Zuha

    • Laura Thomas

Hi Zuha. No form, just send everything to me in an email please.

  4. Marley

    Hi Laura,
Is it okay to mention other books in my essay? eg. Harry Potter

    • Laura Thomas

      Hi Marley. Of course.

  5. mico aldmar mendoza

will you have another competition like this? Because I don’t have a copy of the book, and I’m hoping I’ll have one someday.
    I really want to join.

    • Laura Thomas

Hi Mico. This is an annual competition and will be held again in 2015. If you don’t have time to order the book from your local store, you can purchase a copy of Polly today in our store if you like. I just put the PDF version up this week. There is still time to participate this year!

  6. Hi Laura!
I would love to participate in this competition, but the book is not available is in Pakistan. I do own the ebook, but then how do I attach a picture of myself holding the book?
    Thanks :)

    • Sorry, I know this is a is a stupid question, but: how do I begin the essay? Do I say hello and tell my name, or delve right in?

      • Laura Thomas

Hi Nirvana. Delve right in. It’s not a letter or email…it’s a personal essay. :-)

    • Laura Thomas

Hi Nirvana. Can you take a photo of yourself beside a screen that is showing it on eBook?

  7. Callie

    Dear Laura,
Does the title count for the word count?

    • Laura Thomas

Hi Callie. The title does not count.

  8. Nadia

Hi Laura, I was wondering if I could write this in third person? Would that deduct points?

    • Laura Thomas

Hi Nadia. If you are writing about yourself, it makes the most sense to write in first person.

  9. Hi Laura.
Would there only be one winner or are there some categories also?
For the essay, could it be slightly in a story form?

    • Laura Thomas

Hi Akshta. Only one major winner. Yes, personal essays can have a narrative structure.

  10. Zuha

    Hi Laura,
Every time I visit your website it fills me with thrill to know that you do so much for us young writers as are mostly inexperienced and are unaware of how to improve our writing or self publish.
I really want to enter this contest but unfortunately the paperback of Polly is not available in Pakistan. Can’t there be any other way?

    • Laura Thomas

Hi Zuha. Email me. Perhaps you can purchase an electronic copy from me directly.
