Junior Authors Short Story Contest

The contest ran from 2008 – 2015 and is no longer going to be offered due to declining interest.

jaBlog! LTC’s literary blog is accepting original short stories up to 1,500 words until June 15, 2016. Please consider submitting your original writing to the blog. We respond to all submissions.

Again, due to declining interest and lack of financial support, jaBlog! will run its final issue in July of 2016.

  1. Hi Laura,
I am so exited for the contest starting on April 1. I am already starting on my story. Do you have any tips for me?

    • Hi Isabella. Read winning stories from previous years, and browse jaBlog! for articles on writing short stories.

  2. Karthiga Elenggo

    Hi Laura
    I was wondering
Can the story bad a fanfiction one??
If so, can it be a crossover?

    • Hi Karthiga. I do not judge subject matter, just how well the story is written. Fanfiction is fine.

  3. Emiliana DiGennaro

hi would this contest be a good first step into a career?

    • Hi Emiliana. You would only be competing against young writers your own age, so you certainly stand a better chance of making it to the finals that you would competing against adult writers. And, any opportunity you take that gets you working hard to write, edit and submit, is a positive step toward a writing career. :-)

      • Emiliana DiGennaro

thank you that is good information to know

  4. Sabree

Can I do a two part story and just the second part next time around?

    • Hi Sabree. I don’t understand your question. Please clarify. :-)

      • Sabree

Well the story I’m doing might be longer than 1,000 words. So I was wondering if I could do the first 1,000 words in my first entrée and the other amount of words in my second entrée

        • Hi Sabree. You can only submit one story of no more than 1,000 words to the contest.

          • Sabree

I am going to follow rules. I just wondering if I could split one of my stories

          • Hi Sabree. I cannot say because I don’t know if the two parts can stand alone at the level you would need to be a finalist in this contest. My experience tells me that stories that are part of a bigger piece do not generally stand well on their own as excerpts.

    Hi Laura!
Thank you so much for hosting this contest. I entered a few years ago, and didn’t get a place. Thanks so much for choosing my story as a finalist; this competition has inspired me to take writing further.

  6. Tiffany

    Hi Laura,
I just wanted to say how grateful I am that you keep this contest up and running. It’s super cool that everyone can participate, even from far away places!
    Thanks again,
    Tiffany

Hi Laura, I just missed the competition this year. Do you have an idea when it will start next year? Thanks.

      • Abbie

Hello, I am 10 years old and I really want to enter but I checked the categories to see what group I would be in and get the general idea of how old the people I would be competing against would be and the youngest age was 11, can I still enter or do I have to wait for next year?

        • Hi Abbie. You need to be 11 as of June 30, 2016. While you are waiting, why not write something for jaBlog!? We take submissions from writers ages 9 – 21. Here are the submission guidelines.

          • Abbie

Thank you, hopefully, you’ll see a story of mine next year, meanwhile I will submit to jaBlog! I also have a question, do you have a recommendation for a contest I could enter this year?
            Thanks again,
            Abbie.

          • Hi Abbie. You’ll have to search Google and ask your teacher, maybe, about local writing contests.

    Hi Laura,
This might sound exceptionally stupid, but what’s a CAD coupon? I can’t find any information online.
