Cindy’s poem was one of the top submissions for our weekly writing challenge.
How do I know I’m a writer?
I’m a writer because I am learning from Ms. Whitford
To write without stopping;
To just let myself go;
To say yes now and no later
I’m a writer because I am learning to train my literary dragon
To know how invaluable and crucial he is;
To know when he is needed and when he is not;
To never tell him I wish he was dead
I’m a writer because I am learning from Polly
To never give up on a flimsy first lump of clay;
To sift through other’s stories and see what I can learn from them;
To constantly explore new plots and new directions
I’m a writer because I am learning
That it’s okay to not outdo the best;
That I need to accept and use my talents, and not see them as my dragon sees them;
That I can just be the best me I can be–
As long as I am always learning.
I am a writer because I believe I am.

Cindy writes, “For me, being an LTC member is like when I first tried on my first pair of prescription glasses. I thought I was doing just fine before, but when given the right help, I finally understood everything I was missing.”
